Plaid suit from the House of Paquin, 1939
Order an ImageThis plaid suit belonged to Guendolen Carkeek Plestcheeff (1892-1994), who was born in Seattle but spent time in Europe as a young woman. She continued to make buying trips overseas to restock her wardrobe long after she moved back to Seattle in 1931. This suit was probably purchased on her last trip to Europe before the outbreak of World War II and the Nazi occupation of Paris. The House of Paquin was founded in 1891 by Jeanne Paquin, the first major female designer in the couture industry. Paquin retired in 1920, so this suit was made when Spanish designer Ana de Pombo was the head designer for the house.
